Luke 23:55-56 says,
"The women who had come with Jesus from Galilee followed Joseph and saw the tomb and how His body was laid in it. Then they went home and prepared spices and perfumes. But they rested on the Sabbath in obedience to the commandment."
As I read this passage, one line gripped my heart:
"But they rested on the Sabbath in obedience to the commandment."
These were the women who had journeyed with Jesus from Galilee — women who had witnessed His compassion, His power, His miracles, His unwavering love. They had stood helplessly as their beloved Master endured the agony of the cross. Imagine their grief, their confusion, their unspeakable sorrow as they watched His lifeless body laid in a tomb. Their hearts must have cried, "He wasn't even embalmed…. how could this be?"
Yet even in the midst of unbearable pain and unanswered questions,
they chose to rest — not out of convenience, but out of obedience.
Many commentators point out that these women lacked faith in Jesus' resurrection because they prepared spices and perfumes for His body. Perhaps that is true. Yet what moved me most was not their lack of understanding, but their quiet, steadfast obedience.
When emotions ran high,
when sorrow clouded their vision,
when they were confused, exhausted, and unsure…
they still honoured God's command.
Their obedience became an act of faith.
In Mark 2:27, Jesus — the Lord of the Sabbath — said,
"The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath."
The heart of God has always been for our good. Rest was never meant to burden us, but to bless us. It is His divine invitation to pause, to renew our strength, and to realign our hearts with Him.
Even in seasons of pain or uncertainty, God calls us to rest — not as an escape, but as an act of trust.
Sabbath rest reminds us that He is in control,
that His purposes continue even when we cannot see them,
and that our striving cannot accomplish what His sovereignty already holds.
Rest is one of God's greatest gifts.
It refreshes the body.
It restores the soul.
And when we choose to rest in obedience, especially when life feels unsettled, we display true faith in His goodness.
Obedience in rest is faith in motion.
So we must pause and ask:
How often do we truly "rest in the Lord"?
