Mark 6:14-29 is a timeless lesson that exposes the condition of many hearts even today. It reveals the intentions and inner conflict of King Herod. Scripture says he feared John, knowing him to be a righteous and holy man. And when Herod heard John speak, he was deeply puzzled, yet he liked to listen to him (Mark 6:20).
Herod's story is a mirror for us.
We too can enjoy hearing the Word of God — listening to sermons, reading Scripture, appreciating good teaching — and still walk away unchanged. Like Herod, we may be drawn to truth, yet hold tightly to the very things that keep us from wholehearted obedience.
Herod liked listening to John the Baptist. He respected him. He was moved by his words. But the pleasures of life, the fear of people, and his own pride kept him from true repentance. When the moment came to choose between truth and temptation, he surrendered to sin.
Jesus described this kind of response in the parable of the sower — the seed that falls on shallow soil. It springs up quickly with joy, but because it has no root, it soon withers. Herod's reaction was exactly that: interest without transformation.
Many of us can relate.
We enjoy God's Word.
We love good sermons.
We may discuss Scripture, take notes, and even feel inspired — yet still resist the deeper work of the Spirit because of habits, preferences, perceptions, beliefs, or attitudes we refuse to surrender.
Herod's life teaches us one clear truth:
Hearing the Word is not enough.
It must lead to obedience.
Enjoying Scripture is only the beginning.
The goal is for the Word of God to take root, reshape our hearts, and transform our lives.
