A Song of Ascent – Psalm 130
“My hope is in the Lord”
Three times a year (Passover, Pentecost and Tabernacles), God’s people travelled to Jerusalem for worship — long, difficult journeys across valleys, mountains, and harsh terrains. Yet as they climbed, they sang the Songs of Ascent. Their voices rose with every emotion—fear, joy, exhaustion, hope—anchoring their hearts in God as they journeyed upward.
Psalm 130 is a song of a pilgrim. It begins not with confidence, but with a cry from the depths — yet it ends with a declaration:
“My hope is in the Lord.”
The psalmist repeats, “more than watchmen wait for the morning,” because a watchman knows one truth:
The night cannot last. Morning will come.
That is the kind of hope we are called to hold.
We too are pilgrims of life, navigating valleys of disappointment, climbing mountains of pressure, and crossing terrains shaped by past wounds and future uncertainties. Each step carries a story — of what we have endured, what we have learned, and what still remains unresolved. Yet our direction becomes clear when we choose to lift our eyes and anchor our hope in the Lord, just as the ancient travellers did on their ascent toward Jerusalem.
Why place our hope in Him? Scripture answers plainly:
“The lot is cast into the lap,
but its every decision is from the Lord.”** — Proverbs 16:33
Nothing in our journey is random.
Nothing escapes His wisdom.
Nothing is beyond His power to redeem.
So as we continue our upward climb through life, may this ancient song shape our posture and remind us where our confidence lies:
“My soul waits for You, Lord —
more than watchmen wait for the morning.
