By the end of a year, life has a way of getting…full.
With responsibilities, commitments, ambitions, side projects, worries and many more things that came like temporary guests and then became permanent residents.
And then as we pause, maybe at year-end, maybe at New Year, we feel that there’s less space inside us. Less silence. Less hunger for God. Less sensitivity. Less delight.
The hard question for reflection isn’t, “Did I do enough?” It is “What filled me up?”
An even more honest one is “What pushed God to the edges?” Sometimes our lives can become so crowded that we have no room for Jesus.
So how much room is room enough for Jesus? He answered this to Martha in Luke 10:41-42 ““Martha, Martha,” the Lord replied, “you are worried and upset about many things. But only one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, and it will not be taken away from her.”
Only one thing is necessary.
Not a new planner. Not a tougher routine. Not new resolutions.
Just one thing: Jesus back at the center.
Let’s give Jesus our first and fullest attention; start the day with Scripture or prayer before news, messages, or scrolling. What holds our attention shapes our heart.
Let’s regularly bring our anxieties, ambitions, and resentments to God. In a world that worships success and perfection, confession and surrender may look like weaknesses, but let’s remind ourselves that they’re ways of making space for His grace in our lives.
Every day, let’s create intentional space for Jesus to lead our attention, shape our choices, and quiet our hearts.
So maybe the spiritual practice for the new year is not about “getting more out of your day,” but clearing space. Because when we make room for Him, He comes to make life deeper and truer.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, I realize I have filled my life with many things, some good, some empty, and I can see how easily You get pushed to the margins. I don’t want a year where You’re “included.” I want a year where You’re enthroned. Show me what to release without fear or entitlement. Teach me the freedom of knowing “only one thing is necessary.” Come into the spaces I clear, and remake my heart into a home where You are welcomed, heard, and obeyed. Amen.
