I'm always moved by the closeness Jesus shared with Martha, Mary, and Lazarus. In Luke 10:38-42, we're given a beautiful glimpse of their home in Bethany—a place filled with love, friendship, and devotion. When Jesus visited, He wasn't treated merely as an honoured guest; He was welcomed as a beloved friend. Their home became a refuge where He found rest, affection, and genuine companionship.
Martha welcomed Jesus eagerly, pouring herself into serving Him and His disciples. She wanted everything to be perfect—a true expression of her love. Mary, on the other hand, chose to sit at Jesus' feet, listening with full attention to His words. When Martha grew frustrated, Jesus lovingly reminded her that while service is good, sitting in His presence is better.
What's incredible is that Martha later became the first woman to publicly confess the divinity of Christ (John 11:27). It shows that she truly embraced His words, allowing them to reshape her heart.
Their home in Bethany beautifully reflects what every Christian home can become:
A Worshipping Home — where Christ is honoured and His presence cherished.
A Welcoming Home — open to Jesus and to others with love and hospitality.
A Working Home — where acts of service flow out of devotion, not duty.
A Witnessing Home — where faith in Christ is lived out and shared naturally.
As I reflect on their story, I can't help but ask myself:
What does my home look like?
Is it a place where Jesus would feel welcome?
A place where His presence is sought, His words are heard, and His love is reflected?
May our homes — like Martha and Mary's—be places where Jesus isn't just invited, but delighted to dwell.
