Mark 14:3 – “Jesus was in Bethany at the home of Simon, a man who had previously had leprosy. While he was eating, a woman came in with a beautiful alabaster jar of expensive perfume made from the essence of nard. She broke open the jar and poured the perfume over his head.”
One of the most notable acts of worship is seen in this unnamed woman. She poured out not only an expensive perfume but also her heart in love for the One who had first loved her. The onlookers scorned her, believing she had wasted an entire year’s wages on Jesus. They must have thought, Is He worth that much? What a waste! She gave more than what was required.
While others considered her actions foolish, only Jesus could assess the true value of her gift and interpret it for His followers: “She has done what is beautiful.” It pleased the heart of the Lord to witness such an extravagant expression of love. She was able to give in this way because she had experienced undeserved mercy, unexplainable forgiveness, and extravagant love.
1 John 3:1 – “See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God.”
If we are recipients of such great love, mercy, and forgiveness—overwhelmed and indebted—then we will not measure what we give. Our hearts will cry out: “Our God is worthy! He is worthy of it all and much more!” There will be no calculation, no regret, and no hesitation—only an overflow of gratitude expressed in our giving. A genuine desire to bless and honor the Lord, knowing that He is worthy of it all.
Giving of our time, effort, money, energy, talents, and abilities—when done from a place of love—becomes a beautiful offering in His eyes. May we come to that place where the Lord looks upon our sacrifice and says, “It is beautiful in my eyes.”
