Choices !!!
Psalm 1 is often referred to as the preamble to the book of Psalms. It encapsulates the entire teachings of the Bible, asserting that one’s choices determine their circumstances and the ensuing consequences they must bear. The pursuit of happiness is a universal desire, and Psalm 1 offers us the key to achieving it. The word “Blessed” in Psalm 1, translated from the Hebrew term “eshar,” signifies not only happiness but also righteousness. True blessedness and happiness are found in aligning one’s life with godly principles.
To attain this state of blessedness, one must refrain from walking, standing, or sitting with the wicked, sinners, and mockers. In Hebrew, “walk” symbolizes one’s actions and decisions; “stand” implies acceptance and agreement, and “sit” denotes settling or aligning oneself. The three categories – wicked, sinners, and mockers – encompass those who do not depend on God and His word for guidance and direction.
However, this concept highlights a conscious choice to find delight and meditation in the word of God. “Delighting” involves experiencing joy, reveling, and being enthralled by the teachings of God. “Meditating” implies thoughtful processing, pondering, and keeping one’s mind focused on God’s word. This devotion leads to God’s favor, approval, and fruitfulness, ultimately resulting in prosperity and a sense of calm assurance in all situations.
The Psalm further contrasts the fate of the wicked, who do not rely on God, underscoring the consequences of their actions: instability and judgement. This contrast emphasizes the potential outcomes of righteous living versus unrighteousness. Those who reject God’s ways face permanent separation from Him – a state of destruction and spiritual loss. In this context, Deuteronomy 30:19 comes to mind: “I call heaven and earth to record this day against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live.” This verse emphasizes the importance of making the right choices aligned with God’s teachings to ensure a fruitful and blessed life.
In summary, Psalm 1 serves as a profound introduction to the book of Psalms, encapsulating the fundamental principles of choosing righteousness and godliness. It teaches that embracing God’s word and ways leads to happiness, stability, and spiritual prosperity, while rejecting them results in separation from God and eventual destruction. The power of choice, as highlighted in Deuteronomy, underscores the significance of aligning one’s life with God’s truths for a fulfilling and blessed existence.
